Local Planting and Equiment Rates - April 2008

Date: Tuesday, April 01, 2008

One of the greatest causes for decreased animal population is the lack of quality habitat. Just like people need a roof over their heads and good food to eat, animals need safe nesting and breeding habitat and proper food and water sources to remain healthy and strong. These elements are also vital for healthy reproduction of any species.

Your local Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 has spent the last 10 years raising money to buy equipment for habitat work in Elk and surrounding counties. Chapter 630 now owns a 95hp John Deere model 6403 tractor and a large no-till-drill. Acreage is typically sprayed with Roundup to kill all existing vegetation. After the Roundup has dissolved, the no-till drill process is used to plant seeds without extensive excavation of the soil to help prevent erosion. The no-till drill is the only way to plant certain 'fluffy' seed that can not be broadcast spread.

This year, we are offering our services to private land owners. We hope that this encourages people to plant habitat that will benefit all animals. We will plant on any land but note that there is a 20% discount on equipment prices if the land is open for public hunting. Please call Jared Kuleck at 814-594-3178 to coordinate local planting.

Wildflowers are added to the seed mix to show the effectiveness of the planting. We offer the following mixes but we can order any kind of seed you are looking to use in wildlife plots.
