Planning Your Food Plot

Date: Thursday, May 28, 2009

LET PF HELP YOU PLAN YOUR WILDLIFE FOOD PLOT

’April showers bring May flowers’ but only if the soil was amended and the seed planted. Before you can plant, you need to plan.

PF Chapter 630 has 4 planting projects for 2009.

The first is on the new Pennsylvania Game Lands on the Brandy Camp parcel of State Game Lands # 044, just off of Kyler Road in Fox Township. PF will be covering the cost to truck and apply sludge from the Domtar paper mill on 10 acres of land to replenish the soil for a food plot. The bill for the sludge will be $5500. The PA Game Commission will then fertilize and plant sorghum and possibly sunflower on this plot. Later this year, the chapter hopes to mow and spray acreage for warm season grass planting in 2010 in cooperation with the PA Game Commission.

The second planting project will be helping the Fox Township Sportsmen continue the food plots on the Youth Pheasant Hunting Area in June 2009. Fox Township Sportsmen are committed to improving the land for wildlife by planting 2500 tree seedling this spring. This group has countless projects year round for kids in the community.

The final 2 projects are with local landowners who support Chapter 630 and have hired PF to mow, seed and/or spray their land for planting. We offer our services for a nominal fee.

Please contact either of our two habitat chairmen for advice on your planting needs, Jared Kuleck 772-6162, cell (814) 594-3178 or Chris Yeager (814) 776-1845, cell (814) 594-2966.

There is a Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 meeting on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Ridgway Capital City fire hall on Front Street.
